Welcome to the Fall Equinox!

Equinox comes from Latin meaning “equal night,” referring to the roughly 12-hour day and 12-hour night that occurs only on the two equinox days of the year, representing perfect balance.

As you know, the Autumn Equinox is a meaningful time of year honoring the harvest. The harvest can refer to the things we’ve planted as much as the harvest of our thinking, intentions and efforts; professionally and personally.

If we look back at the Spring Equinox, COVID was upon us. For many, our thinking and efforts were placed simply on trying to survive. Which is why, it’s especially important to consider this equinox.

Are you working against yourself?

We very much impact our environments and one another.
Whats your impact and how often do you consider it throughout the day?

In John Steinbeck’s book, Travels with Charley, he describes his experience while temporarily visiting the hotel room of a previous occupant.

“An animal resting or passing by leaves crushed grass, footprints, and perhaps droppings, but a human occupying a room for one night prints his character, his recent history, and sometimes his future plans and hopes. I further believe that personality seeps into walls and is slowly released.”

Science confirms that our thoughts are electric and our feelings are magnetic creating an electromagnetic field from within and around us which can be measured and perceived,
In fact, it’s this same “field”, that informs our experience in the world and impacts the world around us.

Neuroscience also confirms what many of us have already experienced personally. We can pick up information about another person within ten feet of that person without either party opening their mouths.

Conversations are chemical before they are verbal. Conversations are also electrical.

One of the most simple but often overlooked tools to prime the mind for greater intelligence is a gratitude practice. Practice being the key word because if cortisol has a shelf life of 26 hours, impacting our system long after we seemingly feel better, then we must practice elevating oxytocin, the bonding hormone which currently only has a shelf life of four.

Many studies indicate the positive impact of gratitude on our overall wellbeing. Gratitude elevates our feel good hormones and helps to regulate cortisol.

This is probably why one study showed that gratitude is good for our heart (Mills, 2015). Gratitude lowers blood pressure, decreases stress, and improves sleep.

Do this to increase colleague retention

In your business and in your life, consider implementing an Ovation strategy and celebrate what’s right with the world!

In his book, Trust Factor, Paul Zak shares about the incredible success companies like the Container Store and Zappos experience while implementing an Ovation strategy.

He goes on to share that fifty-five percent of those surveyed agreed that ovation improves their job performance. Even companies having just one recognition program, have a lower turnover rate than no-ovation businesses.

By one estimate, a 5% increase in colleague retention increases profitability by 25 to 85 percent.

Ovation elevates oxytocin and other feel good hormones which causes the heart to open and interact with the prefrontal cortex, Executive Brain. When we play in this field, new thinking, possibilities and outcomes emerge.

What might be possible if this were an every day norm?

Shareable: What got you here won’t get you there? ~ Marshall Goldsmith

What comes to mind when you read that statement?

For me, it prompts the opportunity to change. With the unfolding of fall into the year’s end, we may feel a stronger pull towards change. And in that unfolding, we may want to also include the examination of our internal process for change.

We may forget that with any change, especially with any desire to move forward in our business and expand, there is a change process.

Does your change process normally include intentional enjoyment?
